Review summary

TextFast is appreciated as a needed text expansion tool on Firefox, especially as a workaround for missing native support, and works well in controlled environments. However, multiple users report it often fails or behaves erratically outside its internal playground, including incompatibility with popular web services like Facebook and Gmail. Common issues include unwanted spaces or newlines after expansions, buggy behavior causing freezing or text corruption, and no support for expansions triggered by punctuation besides space. Despite its flaws, users value it for fulfilling an important niche.
Pros
  • Fulfills the basic need of text replacement on Firefox, helping users who rely on text shortcuts.
  • Simple and easy to use interface with import functionality via JSON files for text replacements.
  • Works reasonably well within its designated playground/testing area.
  • Provides a workaround for a long-standing Firefox bug regarding lack of native text replacement support, especially on MacOS.
  • Accepted as a helpful tool by users familiar with similar text expansion tools like yasnippet in Emacs.
Cons
  • Does not work reliably or at all outside its internal playground/testing environment.
  • Adds unwanted spaces or newlines automatically after text expansions, causing formatting issues.
  • Incompatible with many popular web applications and platforms such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Gmail, Outlook browser app, Facebook, and Roll20 chat fields.
  • Bugs cause freezing or corruption of text boxes, and sometimes incorrectly replaces or appends text leading to erratic output.
  • Lacks support for expanding text with punctuation characters immediately following the shortcut, limiting practical use.

2024-11-27 Blind_ Dokładnie takiego rozszerzenie potrzebowałem. Na razie spełnia wszystkie moje wymagnia. Dziękuje pięknie za to!
2024-10-16 Krzysztof Kessler Does not work outside internal texting playground. It replaces the text in text field while typing but as soon as you hit "send" or "enter" it changes back to the short phrase before the change
2024-02-22 Abigail Gus EXACTLY what I needed; Firefox not having this extension built in is kind of bonkers, especially after all this time, but this extension saved my sanity.
2024-01-12 Firefox user 17566498 Great concept, but has a lot of bugs.
2023-12-19 Firefox user 18203091 This appears to be working quite well. Since it requires using the space bar to expand, it would be great if it didn't enter the space as quite a lot of webforms won't allow that space in the field.
2023-09-06 Alex Pedruzzi The program is good but it doesn't work in some places like WhatsApp, Messenger, etc...
2023-07-01 Allen An essential, though flawed, workaround to a longstanding Firefox bug. The fact that Firefox doesn't honor MacOS text replacements has been on Mozilla's bug list for 8+ years. Doubt they'll ever fix it. This plugin does the same thing. Unfortunately, Apple won't let you even cut/paste existing Text Replacements, much less export them, so you'll have to re-enter them manually. The one nontrivial flaw is that it insists on inserting newlines after it makes the substitution, even if you didn't type a newline. If the original text was followed by a space, the substitution should be followed by a space. Doesn't seem to work that way.
